About Interval

Interval is an independent photographic publication built around short, self-contained documentary stories told primarily through photographs.

Each Interval presents a small, deliberate sequence — typically three photographs — supported by only as much text as the story requires. It sits somewhere between a photographic magazine, an independent documentary publication, a photobook, and the immediacy of a personal photographic essay.

Why a small format

Rather than publishing conventional fifteen-to-thirty image essays, Interval gives photographers a small space in which to tell one precise story. The constraint is the point: it favours observation over spectacle, and asks a story to work without extensive explanatory text.

What to expect

One story at a time, presented with minimal distraction. New Intervals are added slowly and deliberately — the archive is meant to accumulate rather than compete for attention. Over time, a selection of published stories will be brought together in an annual printed edition.

For photographers

Interval is curated rather than open-submission. Photographers are approached, or may get in touch directly, and are encouraged to consider producing work specifically for Interval rather than extracting a handful of images from an existing series. Photographers retain copyright to their work; Interval receives only the licence needed to publish, archive, and promote the story.
